DIY Room Sprays: Clearing the Air & the Mind

Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt calmer because of a gentle scent in the air? Scent has a unique way of shaping the mood of a space. In fact, there's science behind this: smell travels directly to our brain's limbic system – the seat of emotion and memory – which is why the right aroma can immediately shift our state of mindnews.harvard.edu. Over the years, I've learned that "clearing the air" can truly help clear the mind.

In a busy, chaotic world, it's often the little rituals that ground us. One of my favorite daily rituals is spritzing an essential oil room spray to reset the energy in my home. Breathe in the forest floor, exhale the noise. That simple mantra inspired our newest blend, Wanderwood Mist. This DIY room spray combines grounding patchouli, uplifting sweet orange, calming cedarwood, and relaxing lavender – a harmonious blend intended to help center you and your space. Best of all, it's easy to make with just a few simple ingredients.

Wanderwood Mist DIY Room Spray

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz distilled water

  • 1 oz witch hazel (or vodka for longer shelf life)

  • 10 drops patchouli (grounding, earthy, musky)

  • 6 drops sweet orange (uplifting, balancing)

  • 5 drops cedarwood (calming, woodsy depth)

  • 4 drops lavender (relaxing, floral balance)

Instructions:

  1. In a small glass spray bottle (around 3–4 oz size), combine the distilled water and witch hazel (or vodka).

  2. Add in the essential oils: first add patchouli, then sweet orange, followed by cedarwood, and finally lavender.

  3. Cap the bottle and shake gently to mix all ingredients thoroughly.

  4. To use, spritz the Wanderwood Mist around your room, on linens, or in any space that needs a refresh. As you spray, take a deep breath and truly inhale the calming aroma, imagining any stagnant energy clearing away.

  5. Store your room spray in a cool, dark place when not in use. (Shake briefly before each use, as natural oils can settle.)

How Scent Became Part of My Wellness Journey

For me, creating a blend like Wanderwood Mist is deeply personal. I wasn't always so mindful about scent. In my early years, I thought of fragrance as just a finishing touch – a quick spray of air-freshener before guests came over. That changed when I began delving into wellness and self-care. I started to notice how much my environment influenced my mood. When my space felt stuffy or chaotic, I felt that way inside; when it was fresh and serene, my mind mirrored that calm.

During a particularly stressful period in my life, a dear friend gifted me a small lavender oil spray. Each night before bed, I spritzed it on my pillow and took a moment to breathe deeply. I was astonished at how quickly my racing thoughts would slow down. That simple ritual of scent + intention became a turning point. It taught me that I could consciously shift my emotional state by tending to my personal space.

From that point on, I started exploring different oils and blends, using them as tools to set the tone in my home. On anxious days, I'd diffuse or spray grounding scents like patchouli or cedarwood to find stability. When I felt sluggish or low, a burst of sweet orange or a minty blend would lift my spirits. I learned to connect certain aromas with certain states of mind – creating an emotional anchor through fragrance. My home gradually evolved into a sanctuary, filled with natural scents that reflected how I wanted to feel.

The lesson I learned: we have the ability to craft our own peace. For me, it often starts with a scent. By intentionally choosing how my home smells, I'm also choosing how I want to feel in that space. It's a subtle, gentle form of self-care that reminds me I'm in control of my environment and my outlook. This understanding is what eventually led me to create blends like Wanderwood Mist for others – to share the grounding, clearing experience that helped me so much on my own journey.

Embracing Calm Rituals

As you venture into making your own room sprays or simply enjoy the scents you love, I encourage you to make it a ritual. Wanderwood Mist is not only a DIY recipe – it's also a little piece of my heart that I'm bringing to our community. For those who prefer a ready-made option, this spray will also be available in my shop and at our local farmer’s markets. But whether you mix it up yourself or grab a bottle from me, the intention remains the same: to help you create a calm, positive space wherever you are.

In the end, it's about more than just making a room smell nice. It's about creating moments of peace in our everyday lives. A few deep breaths, a meaningful scent, and a mindful pause can become a powerful ritual for well-being. I invite you to try it for yourself – clear the air, clear your mind, and let these natural aromas guide you back to center.
